While teaching at the first International Quilt Conference Africa, I was able to meet the other teachers and it was delightful to interview several of them.  American Patchwork & Quilting Editor Jennifer Keltner was also at the show and we had did these togehter.   Our first guest is quilt teacher Wilna De Beer. I LOVE MY JOB! I am able to chat with the best of the best... Today I'm delighted to interview the much talented and very clever Kim Diehl! You know AND love her work. Traditional with lots of gorgeous applique. Her style has captivated applique and patchwork quilters across the world.

How/why did you start quilting?

I began quilting after falling in love with a sampler quilt pattern in an American Patchwork & Quilting pattern booklet.  I was just wandering by the quilting table at a local crafting and quilt shop's sidewalk sale, and I was completely smitten.  On impulse, I bought all the tools and gadgets I was told I needed, grabbed what seemed like an exorbitant amount of fabric, and figured out each new step as I came to it.  I was immediately hooked!

What is your favorite quilt thing to do? Why

I love sewing on my binding.  It lets me snuggle under my new quilt and treat myself to some guilty pleasure time while watching TV, and I figure it's my reward for persevering through the cutting stage of my project.  (Laughing)

What does your work area look like .. what is your favorite part of it.. what would you change?

I recently gave my sewing room a complete overhaul and reorganized it beautifully....it took me a few days to remember all of the safe places where I put everything, but I'm humming along now. Some people would look at it and think it's quite small (and they're right!), but I prefer to think of it as cozy.  Everything's within easy reach and I'm able to churn out tons of quilts in this little area.  I especially love my red curtains - they cast a warm glow on everything.....and hopefully make me look younger.  ; )  I love my balance of organization and "debris", which makes it a really fun place to create in. 

What is the last piece of fabric you bought

I most recently bought a beautiful black print from Jo Morton for the border of a quilt I'm currently working on...can't go wrong with Jo!

If you could only pick one word, what would it be?

Accurate!  I try really hard to avoid the "measure twice, cut three times" curse.

 

what was the most interesting trip you have ever taken? Why?

Each year, my husband and I spend a week at the Oregon coast...maybe not the most interesting destination ever, but sitting and looking at the waves while doing nothing at all but sipping a steaming cup of coffee is so soothing.

What’s your motto/advice you live by?

When it comes to quilting, I've decided that any mistake I may make is just an unforeseen opportunity to make things better.

snow or sun? Snow in the sunshine!

What are five things you can’t live without?

Coconut mochas, my family, coconut mochas, beautiful fabric, and more coconut mochas.....

dog or cat? Definitely DOG...I have three of them, and they're total characters.  With their constant companionship and help, it's a complete mystery to me how I get anything done.

Any exciting news?

I've been a busy girl -- my Simple Charm book with Martingale & Company was recently released and I'm blessed to say that it's been really well received, my new Homestyle Quilts book co-authored with my technical editor, Laurie Baker, is due for release in October, and I currently have three fabric lines with Henry Glass in the works.  It's more fun than I can say to spend my days "working" at what most people consider to be a hobby.

What is your favorite project?

My favorite project is always whatever new thing I'm working on.  There two different color versions of the block for my new Vintage Berry Blossoms pattern,

which will be available exclusively through my workshops.

What is your favorite spot?

My front porch, all decked out for this year's Fourth of July holiday - I spend a lot of time on my porch dreaming up quilt designs.

Part 2 of my interviews with the Fat Quarterly magazine team! Three more members...

First let's meet John Adams. I love tweeting with John and finding him at a quilt show to spend some time with. Of course finding John is easy as he is about 6' 800" tall and you can spot him a mile away!

What is the last piece of fabric you bought, and why?

I bet John gives those adorable children of his lots of quilts.. and his wife might just put in a few custom orders as well

What was the most difficult part about working on a book with three other authors?

Do you have a favourite story about quilting... maybe something that happened online, with your local sewing group, on a trip?

I have a story about JOHN!! He is so generous.. that when I was hunting for a particular fabric he sent me his scraps! This quilt is John's Urban Decay.. yep.. a MANLY quilt!

What is the last piece of fabric you bought, and why?

Last piece was 4 yards of dark grey with tiny cream spots. I thought it would be a perfect background and I just need to decide what to use it for now!



When did you last give away a quilt and to who?.

I have the Hopscotch quilt in a bag ready to be sent off for Siblings Together. Siblings Together is a programme, created for young people in care, kinship and adoption. Sibling Together holiday camps reunite siblings whose lives are affected by care and adoption. Lynne of Lily's quilts is collecting quilts that will be given to the children at the camps. I have a little boy who we adopted who sadly won't be able to see his siblings so it's a subject close to my heart.

What quilt is on your bed?

At the moment I have the jewel box quilt from Issue 1 of Fat Quarterly on my bed at the moment. I think it's the favourite out of all the quilts I've made.

What was the most difficult part about working on a book with three other authors?

Seriously, nothing! It was a wonderful experience as we all communicate very well together.


Do you have a favourite story about quilting... maybe something that happened online, with your local sewing group, on a trip?

Probably my favourite story is about how I met Katy. I had been reading Katy's blog for a while one day I was ready her blog one day and she mentioned that she lived in the 'quilting wasteland of West Yorkshire'. I left a comment telling her that I also lived in the quilting wasteland of West Yorkshire. It turned out she lived 1/2 hour away from me and I had no idea.

On blogging ....no, I don't blog very often as with limited time I have to choose between blogging and quilting. Quilting wins every time!

I saved Lynne Goldsworthy for last. She is the newest member of the Fat Quarterly team. Every time I start a chat with Lynne I'm laughing so hard my sides hurt.. she is THAT kind of gal!

Last Piece of Fabric:  

I bought Katy's FQ stack of Curio by Basic Grey which she'd been hoarding for some time waiting for the perfect project.  I'd been coveting it for some time and finally persuaded her to part with it so that it can sit in my stash waiting for the perfect project.  I had to make a deal with her that I would only take it off her hands if I was allowed to pay market value because otherwise Katy would just give it to me, as she is obscenely generous with her fabrics, and then I'd feel guilty and wouldn't be able to take it. 

Last gave away a quilt: 

My older sister gets most of my quilts and recently had a parcel of three sent her way.  A pink Paris swoon for her daughter, a Batman quilt for her son and my "theyoutube" quilt for her.  From day one she has followed my blog even though she has zero interest in quilting and mostly has no idea what I'm on about, just because she's kind.  So the bonus for her is that she pretty much has to like one of my quilts and she gets it.  She also got my favourite quilt of all, my Penguin Books quilt.

Quilt on Bed:  

We have this absolutely colossal bed since we have four kids and when they were little there always seemed to be at least two sneaking in at some point in the night.  Anyway, that is my excuse for not having a homemade quilt on my bed.  I have a brick quilt made all in blue plaids which I absolutely adore and which my husband bought me for Christmas many years before I started making quilts myself.  I don't think I'll ever be able to make a quilt big enough for my bed on my domestic machine.

Writing with three others:  

Sadly I can't answer this question as I joined the team after their work on the book was finished.  I can say, however, that working with them running the retreat in London in June put an enormous strain on my stomach muscles.  I don't think I have ever laughed as much in the space of one weekend although I did spend the last few hours crying my eyes out because I was so sad it was ending.  Luckily we're already talking about our second retreat in London next year so I can start counting the sleeps until then.

  There have been a couple of occasions where I've worked hard on something, showed my husband what I've made and he's seen something completely different than I was intending to make.  For example, when making a doll quilt for one of the doll quilt swaps, I decided to add a stylish flash of colour to the centre of my quilt, showed it to my husband who pointed out that I'd actually sewn together some ladies parts.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/lilysquilts/5381716250/in/photostream.

Pat Sloan Meet the Fat Quarterly Team Post 1

I wanted to featuerd the entire team of Fat Qaurterly Magazine! This is a super lively and witty bunch of quilters and I have meet several of them.

I was also honored to be asked to write a review to be included IN their joint book.. (BLOGGED HERE)

Today in 'Part 1" I've interviewed Katy Jones and Tacha Bruecher about the collaboration on the book and more!

Tomorrow will be Lynne, Brioni and John. In the photo above we also have Mandy 2nd in from the left!

I'm starting with Katy as I adore her. She is the reason I got hooked into this crazy bunch at Fat Quarterly. I swoon over every little thing she makes and writes... and I think she is beyond fabulous. If she ever wants to move to America I will find her a house on my street... because I'd want her that close.. smooch!

What is the last piece of fabric you bought, and why?

The last fabric I bought was a variety of text prints from Pink Castle Fabrics - newsprints and the like. I like to have texty fabrics handy because they're incredibly useful as alternatives to solids and when I see a good one I have to snap it up!



When did you last give away a quilt and to who?

I tend to give a lot of quilts away. I have one ready to go a friend's baby who is getting christened in a couple of weeks. That's not the last though, is it!? My last gift quilt was for one of my very close friends from my sewing group has just had a baby. I made her a baby quilt and our group made her a a big scrappy quilt. Just because she's so lovely.

What quilt is on your bed?

I have a rotation of quilts on my bed. Right now there's a Hope Valley dresden plate quilt, but it's due switching out for something more summery so I might do that today!

What was the most difficult part about working on a book with three other authors?

Not hanging out in the same room together. I miss them, we don't get to be together enough because we are dotted across the globe. I loved the whole process, we work pretty well together (now wait for someone else to say it was a nightmare and never again!) It wasn't too far removed from what we do with the e-zine, so I think all in all it was pretty ok.

Do you have a favorite story about quilting... maybe something that happened online, with your local sewing group, on a trip?

My local group, who are the best friends I could ever wish for, meet at my friend Lynne's house. We sew (or not - rarely sewing gets done) around her large hexagonal table. This isn't really a story, I just want them to know how much I appreciate them, love them and couldn't live without them. They keep me sane, keep me grounded and make me howl with laughter.

What is the last piece of fabric you bought, and why?

The last piece of fabric that I bought was Flea Market Fancy by Denyse Schmidt. I missed out on getting yardage of some of the prints first time round and didn't want to miss out again! Now I just need to think of the perfect project.

When did you last give away a quilt and to who?

  I am pretty much constantly giving away quilts these days as there are only so many that my girls and husband will use! I think the last quilt I gave away was to my parents as a thank you for looking after my girls whilst I was busy at the Fat Quarterly Retreat!

 
What Quilt is on your bed?

On my bed is a very special quilt. It is called over the Rainbow and is a quilt from my new book Hexa-go-go. It is special both because it is in my book but also because members of the group Bee Inspired stitched up some of the blocks for the quilt. (One of those members was John and I also got to meet Ann, another member, at our recent retreat!)

What was the most difficult part about working on a book with three other authors?
Actually believe it or not working together was pretty easy. Probably the most difficult bit was not being able to get together to have a hug at the end of the process or to show each other our quilts in person!

Do you have a favorite story about quilting... maybe something that happened online, with your local sewing group, on a trip?

I was involved in the Pillow Talk Swap recently and unfortunately my partner failed to make me a pillow. I had been waiting for about 6 weeks and had been chatting to my friend Aylin about it and what a shame it was and nevermind and had pretty much decided that I probably wasn't going to receive a pillow this time round. The next thing I know there was a knock at the door and my friend Aylin was there and she had made me the most AMAZING pillow as an angel pillow for the swap and had hand delivered it to me at home. I was pretty touched by that.  So thank you Aylin if you are reading and sorry the house was such a complete pig sty!

Pat Sloan Featured Quilter Sara Lawson

I love bags

no really... I LOVE Bags... I actually have somewhat of a bag problem.  I want to make them, own them, give them, keep them. 

I started to followo Sara's blog Sew Sweetneess because SHE is a bag lady too (ha!). And not only that she does fabulous tutorials and make clothings with quilt fabric (did I tell I used to make LOTS of clothing? To go with those bags?)

Let me introduce you to Sara.. so you too can drool over her fabulous work and makes some bags!

How/why did you start quilting?

I started sewing as an adult about 6 years ago, but I didn't begin quilting until around 2 years ago, at the same time that I started blogging. Anyone who reads or writes a blog, you know how easy it is to get inspired and sucked into new projects, so the blogging really got me going.

The first blog I followed was Amy from (http://www.amylouwhosews.com) amylouwho?, who I met through my friend, Kim (http://gogokim.blogspot.com).

I started writing bag sewing patterns for Pellon (http://pellonprojects.wordpress.com/) late last year, and work really hard to think of new designs and ways of explaining steps that are (hopefully) easy to understand! One of my bags even comes with a video (http://www.sewsweetness.com/2012/05/tutorial-video-fylerion-bag.html), which hopefully I can do more of in future (I just need about 6 extra hours every day!).

How did you pick your blog name?

My blog name, Sew Sweetness, comes from a cute pink 7" vinyl record that I got when I was in high school. The band was called Jimmy Eat World, and the song was 'Sweetness'. The record only had a few songs on it, but another was a great cover song of Willie Nelson's  'Crazy'. Someone from Free Quilt Patterns (http://www.freequiltpatterns.info) saw my blog and recognized the song title and thought, "No way, this is a quilter we're talking about here," but I think quilters definitely come in all shapes and sizes!

What is your favorite quilt thing to do? Why?

My favorite quilt thing to do is making the quilt tops. I have a small stack of quilts that I never finished, just because I don't especially relish the quilting and binding process! I think quilt patterns/blocks that feature large-scale prints are really fun, and I also like paper piecing.

I hosted a New York Beauty (http://www.sewsweetness.com/2012/02/new-york-beauty-quilt-along.html) series on my blog earlier in the year, and if I had enough hours in the day, I would definitely make a ton of paper pieced blocks for a quilt!

What does your work area look like .. what is your favorite part of it.. what would you change?

My work area is more practical than pretty. My sewing area shares half a room at the front of our house, with all my husband's computer gear (although I claimed the area in front of the window!). I have a large, white table that doubles as a lighting area for photographing sewing projects at night.

I wish I had more time to decorate my sewing area to look pretty, but I am always so busy sewing this project or that one, I don't stop long enough for that, lol!

What is the last piece of fabric you bought

I just prepaid for the complete line of Tula Pink's 'The Birds and the Bees' (http://tulapink.com/collections/current-collections/the-birds-and-the-bees/), which I am *extremely* excited about!! I bought enough to make several projects (quilt, dress, a couple of accessories).

If you could only pick one word, what would it be?

Creative. It's a great word for how my mind works, and to me, telling someone their project is creative is one of the best compliments you can give...that means they really thought outside of the box and really made it 'their own'.

What was the best piece of advice you ever got, who was it from?

"Take a couple days off and come back to it."  I am somewhat of a frantic seamstress. I put all sorts of self-imposed deadlines on my sewing projects; if I think it should be done in a certain amount of time or by a certain day, I will make it happen. This occasionally leads to a bit of a burnout, which some of my blogging friends can definitely attest to from hearing me complain about it on Facebook or on Twitter, lol. I think this advice definitely rings true...if you are having a hard time on a certain sewing technique or project, instead of abandoning your project, just give yourself a breather and when you come back, you will be able to do it.

 what was the most interesting trip you have ever taken? Why?

I went to Quilt Market for the first time this past spring. It was the most fun that I have ever had in my adult life (and also possibly the scariest, because I am so shy!)! The best part was meeting like-minded individuals who live and breath sewing like I do. I think connecting with other people who share the same interest as you is a great thing; whether it is your local quilt guild, some people you meet at the fabric shop, or even people you have connected with online, it's just a great relief to share your thoughts and ideas with others!

Am I allowed to say overcast? It's the best light for photographing a quilt or other sewing project, lol.

What are five things you can’t live without?

My family, fabric, my sewing machine, juice, and my computer.

dog or cat?
I love cats and dogs, but I developed an extreme allergy to them 2 years ago, so I'm going to plead the fifth.

Any exciting news or best posts at your blog you'd like to share?

Pat Sloan Featured Quilter Siobhan Rogers

I love blogs and I'm so excited there are so many talented quilters that share their work with us.  I am spending time this year featuring quilters I follow. People who's blogs I read for a variety of reason. I want you to meet the people that inspire me via their photos, quilts and writing.

I started to follow BeaSpoke Quilts blog for many of the above reasons. I enjoy Siobhan's writing and her photography is amazing.

Today I'm delighted to share my interview with Siobhan Rogers of Bea Spoke Quilts.

I’m Siobhan Rogers a quilter from Sydney Australia

• How/why did you start quilting?

 A few Women in the family had always sewn/ quilted and as a child I loved to pick fabrics and watch the making process and of course receive the finished product!.

The first quilt that I made all by myself was made 12 years ago and it was for my first child. So many people had made me things over my childhood that I cherished, It made me want to make something for my own child to cherish. The quilt is a bit tatty now, but very much loved

• What is your favorite quilt thing to do? Why?

 Buying Fabric! No seriously I love all the fabric designs that are coming out. We are so lucky now with the variety and choice of fabrics. The Internet plays a big part, helping little fabric designers all over the world become known. Bricks and mortar shops have a huge range available compared to 10 years ago.

• What does your work area look like .. what is your favorite part of it.. what would you change?

Currently I’m working in the back area of our house, It has a lovely big window and lots of light. I have everything spread all over the place. We are in the process of renovating and a studio is coming soon. A studio will be great for storage and being organized maybe even having the occasional small class. I must say I kinda like having my quilts in progress hanging in the house it adds colour & interest. Lots of friends drop in to check out what my latest project is.

• What is the last piece of fabric you bought

I was at one of my local quilt shops only a few days ago and bought some Liberty of London Tana Lawn for a quilt I’m making for a friend.

• If you could only pick one word, what would it be?

Resilience – it’s so important in every facet of life - work and play.

• What was the best piece of advice you ever got, who was it from?

When I was first married and we had just bought a house my Nana told me to never learn to mow the lawn because then that would add another thing to my to do list! At the time I laughed but what I think she really meant was don’t try to do everything, sometimes we all spread ourselves pretty thin.

• what was the most interesting trip you have ever taken? Why?

I’ve been lucky and I have done a fair bit of Travel, My Fathers Irish and we still have family in Ireland. The first trip Overseas was to Ireland. I was 8 years old and it was very exciting. I think it sparked my interest in History.

• What’s your motto/advice you live by?

That’s a tricky one, I think I just try to be a good person. Be good and try your best – that’s what I’m constantly telling my kids. I’m sure it goes in one ear and out the other.

• snow or sun

Snow – only because I have never seen snow! We have lots of Sun here in Sydney but no snow.

• What are five things you can’t live without?

My Family is number one all the way through to five!

Honestly without them all I wouldn’t be who I am and achieved all the things I have.

• dog or cat?

Dog we have a 3 year old Dalmatian, he causes a fair bit of trouble but he’s a good dog I can’t imagine what it would be like without him. 

• a favorite project

My Favorite project

I designed some text fabric for a strip quilt as a gift for my husband. The Quilt also ended up in Modern Patchwork 2012 by Interweave. I have three quilts in that particular Publication One on the cover!

• your yard, favorite haunts.. things that are personal and that maybe you have not shared or not shared in awhile.

 I’m from Sydney and our local area has lots of bushland, parks and is close to the harbor. It’s a great place to spend a summer evening watching the ferries go by as the sunsets.
